A couple of weeks ago I attended ‘Women In Business: The New Way’ at One Roof Women in Melbourne. It was really special to be in a room full of women who are (or who want to be!) in business.
The panel was made up of six incredible women in business — Tash Spencer, Jade Mckenzie, Amy Mackenzie, Johanna Parker, Sammie Fleming and Ellie Swift — who shared their insights on “the new way” of doing business.
It was an inspiring and insightful evening, full of many takeaways and tips. My biggest reminder/takeaway was that we can all do business in our *own* way.
It was awesome to have the different insights, perspectives and experiences of the six women, who each have their own approach to doing business. Here are my notes and ‘takeaways’ from the event…
On success:
∞ Success can be intangible and measured by how you feel.
∞ Success can end up being different than what we think it will be for us and it can change over time in your business. It can also help us work out what we really want.
∞ You can measure success by how proud you feel at the end of the day when your head hits the pillow and if you’re values have been met.
∞ Often when we’re not feeling successful, it’s because we’re comparing ourselves to people who are at different levels than us. Remember this and be kind to yourself!
∞ When you’re not feeling successful and having expectations on what that ‘should’ look like, use it as an opportunity to focus on what you have done and be grateful for it.
On taking the leap in starting a business / making decisions in your business:
∞ Take ownership for what you want — the business you want to have, the life you want to live.
∞ Keep following what feels ‘right’ for you.
∞ Allow yourself to build your business gradually. It’s okay for it to take time to grow and build up momentum over time.
∞ When starting your business commit to finding a way to make it work for you, your life and your schedule.
∞ When making the decision to start a business (or go full-time in it) remember that nothing is a “forever” decision.
∞ It’s okay to step out of your business (for some time or forever) if it is not serving you. And it’s okay for your business to evolve as you do.
∞ You get confident about being in business by being in business. So be in action, despite fear.
∞ When starting a business, ask yourself: What is the worst that could happen? Play it out and get clear on what will actually happen if it doesn’t go to plan and remember that you’ll be okay.
∞ Align your head and heart when making decisions. Follow your heart with what you want, while using your head to prepare. Ask yourself: How can you support yourself to take the leap?
∞ Dedicate what time you do have for your business, with the resources that you have.
On money:
∞ Trust yourself to bring money in like you would trust someone else to pay you.
∞ An important point that come up a lot with money during the night was to have multiple income streams coming in (which may include working for others as well).
∞ Get clear on what is coming in and out in your business.
∞ When you’re doing something you love, you end up spending less money on trying to make yourself happy.
∞ Look at the percentage of your income compared to the time you’re spending on that activity. Also take into account how much energy it requires, for the outcome you’re getting.
∞ Have a sales spiral starting with free offerings, entry level offerings and then higher priced offerings.
∞ Set up your business in a sustainable way. Explore how you can have reoccurring income coming in. Ask yourself: What can you leverage in your business?
∞ Remember that everyone’s situation is different and keep that in mind when working out what is right for you.
∞ You don’t need to invest a lot of money to launch a business. In the beginning do as much as you can DIY and remember that it doesn’t have to be ‘perfect’ to begin.
∞ You don’t have to spend money for your business to evolve.
On getting clients and promotion:
∞ One of the best ways to attract clients is through creating connection and community on social media. Show up consistently and share authentically and genuinely.
∞ Be in the energy of what you want.
∞ Word of mouth is a very powerful way to continually attract clients. Show up with ALL of you and your whole heart. Prioritise being in service above sales.
∞ Allow yourself to be seen and heard. Actively talk about what you do. Tell people HOW they can work with you.
∞ Play the long game in your business. Keep showing up, serving and sharing.
∞ Focus on building community around you.
∞ Focus on creating connection with your ideal clients, rather than ‘promoting’
∞ Speak directly to the people you want to serve. Get clear on your ideal clients. Focus on serving that person.
∞ Remember that it’s a disservice to not share your message.
On ‘the new way’ of doing business:
∞ Be kind and compassionate with yourself as you navigate starting (and having) a business.
∞ Take your power back when you need to.
∞ Prioritise self-care first before work. Make feeling amazing your #1 priority. This will impact how you’re able to show up in your business and help you to do your best work.
∞ Know what you need to put in place in your life in order to feel energised.
∞ Surround yourself with like-minded people who ‘get’ it.
∞ Get amongst the world and out of the business world when you can.
∞ Allow the journey to unfold for you in time. Be open to navigating your business in a way that feels right for you, no matter what it ‘looks’ like.
∞ You can do business — and life — your way.
∞ There is no one approach to being in business. There is no one approach for anything!
As you can tell, there were so many incredible insights shared during the evening. If you were at the event I’d love to know from you: What your biggest takeaway? And if you weren’t, I’d love to know what takeaway from this post has resonated with you the most 🙂
