I love reading memoirs because I love seeing the world through someone else’s perspective. I also love how much you can learn from reading about other people’s experiences.
Honestly, before I read Amy Poehler’s Yes Please I didn’t know much about her at all, besides that she was funny and played Regina George’s Mum in Mean Girls.
Rolling Stones described this book as a “329-page nonlinear hopscotch across Poehler’s life and career” – and I found it unexpectedly charming. It also made me realise that Amy is so much more than just Regina George’s Mum!
Yes Please is a candid account of Amy’s experiences in life and I would describe the book as hilarious, honest, inspiring and genuine.
One of my favourite things about this book is that it’s chock full of nuggets of wisdom and real life advice, so here are some of the standout takeaways for me…

1. Judge other people less.
Just because someone isn’t doing something differently than how you would, doesn’t make them wrong and us right. I absolutely loved Amy’s motto suggestion…
2. Winning isn’t everything.
I loved hearing about Amy’s perspective of success and winning. It was refreshing and I think really helpful for all of us. I love how she admits that winning is great, but it isn’t everything.
3. Everything is always changing.
Amy says that “change is the only constant” and this is such a good reminder that nothing is permanent and whatever you’re going through will pass.
4. Treat yourself as a friend.
I love how Amy says she tries to treat herself as she would a friend. It’ challenging, but a really powerful way to stop being your own worst enemy.
5. Let go of what’s not important.
If it isn’t important to you, let it go. This book reminded me to let go of what isn’t serving me, so I can focus on what is actually aligned with me – and make more room for the good stuff.
6. You can say no if you want to.
Saying no can be really difficult, but it can also be super empowering. I love that Amy recommends making ‘No’ a complete sentence and that she says…
7. Don’t take life (or yourself) too seriously!
This was one of the biggest things I took aways from this book. It reminded me that life is meant to be fun! Amy says “nobody looks stupid when they are having fun” and I totally agree. Reminder to self: make more time for fun – and for spontaneous dance parties!
8. Start before you’re ready.
Starting before you’re ready is powerful. It is one of the reasons you are reading this here on my blog today. I loved Amy’s perspective on this…
